Mr. Avery, from the Sugar Shack, came to help us tap four maple trees on Tuesday! It was a beautiful afternoon and we all had high hopes of seeing sap drip right away. We thought the perfect temperature would yield great results!
It was a challenging hike even though it was right behind the school! The sticky snow was slippery under our boots. Once we made it to the marked trees, Mr. Avery let students help with each step of tapping.

Mr. Avery told us about different types of taps, or spiles!
Justin had to be careful to get the angle of the hole just right to allow the sap to flow down into the spile. Next we had to make sure we cleaned the hole out, poke out any dirt or spiders!

Jenelle found the perfect twig for the job!
We then wanted to make sure the tap was nice and snug in the tree. After all, sap was going to continually drip into the bucket, potentially getting very heavy! Once the bucket is hung, Mr. Avery showed us how to put a lid, or hat, on the bucket securely. He explained that it helps keep leaves, animal droppings and bark out of our delicious sugar water!

Courtney stepped up to the plate!
When we checked on the buckets yesterday, there was not much to see. The students were eager where it was nearly 50 degrees! But there is a little down there at the bottom of the barrel!
